The most common fracture of a bone of the shoulder is a broken collarbone. These injuries are very painful, but in general, they heal very well on their own and do not need surgery. For more information about fractures of the collarbone, click here. Fractures of the bone of the upper arm, the humerus, are very different. These fractures often require surgery so that the broken parts of the bone can be put back together in the proper place and allowed to heal in a position where the shoulder will function normally. If you have broken the humerus, it is very important that you see an orthopedic surgeon who will be able to discuss with you the nature of your fracture and what the best way is to treat it. back to top | back to Fractures and Dislocations | Rotator Cuff Tears
